Destination Overview

Udaipur is the administrative headquarters of the Udaipur district in the State of Rajasthan. Udaipur’s breathtaking lakes, rivers, palaces, temples, fortes and gardens makes for a very romantic setting.

Udaipur is a choice location for film makers, and many will remember the destination from the scene in the film Octopussy where James Bond swims up to the floating palace filled with beautiful women. Maharana Udai Sigh founded Udaipur in 1568 after the emperor of Mughal (Akbar) felt that his current capital, Chittograrh, wasn’t safe enough for his expanding empire. As the new capital of Mewar, the emperor built up his city with spectacular palaces and temples.

Holidays in Udaipur would be incomplete without visiting the emperor’s palace. The City Palace consists of a mixture of small and large buildings, museums, and gardens. Its combination of architecture from the medieval ages and historical accolades will keep your curiosity satisfied. These palaces are home to architectural statements from the Rajasthani, the Munghal, the European and the Chinese cultures. The entire palace is made of premium grade granite and marble whilst the interior of the castle is adorned with delicate artwork and intricate mirror decorations. Some of the outstanding places within the palace include the Amar Vilas, Badi Mahal, Durbar hall, Fatehprakash Palace, Krishnah villas and the Manak Mahal.

One of the biggest draws to a holiday in Udaipur are the romantic lakes here. Lake Fate is an artificial lake made by the Maharana. It is situated to the north of Lake Pichola and it plays host to three beautiful islands. The largest of the three islands is the Nehru Park. The second island has many impressive water jet fountains while the third has a solar observatory park. Residents organize an annual event, the Hariyali Amavasya Mela or (Green New Moon Fair) at the lake precincts in the months of August/September which are not to be missed. Lake Badi sits 12-14 kilometers from Udaipur. This peaceful holiday destination can be accessed by bike or by foot in the late afternoon when the hot day cools down. This lake is completely undeveloped and does not have any facilities around it giving you that pristine look you would only find in the wildest and most untamed destinations. The Pichola is an artificial fresh water lake created in 1362 AD and named after the nearby Picholli village. The lake palace in the middle of the lake is the one from the James Bond movie. The two islands of Jag Mandiwas and Jag Niwas are located

During your holiday to Udaipur, you can visit one of the many gardens in the destination. One of the gardens you will see on your Udaipur holiday is the Saheliyon Ki Bari that lies to the northern side of the city.  It has a lotus pool, elephants, fountains and kiosks. The local’s say that the mingling sounds from the different water channels creates a peaceful sound that can help calm the mind. This garden was created for a group of 48 maidens who accompanied the princess of Udaipur to her dowry paying ceremony. This garden also includes a small museum to commemorate the event. Alternatively, you could visit the Gulab Bhagh bird park or a rose garden near the palace where you can enjoy Udaipur’s holiday mood. The garden has a library that contains ancient manuscripts and books that are fascinating even if you just look at the pictures. Other gardens include the Dudh Talai, which has an amazing rock fountain and a breathtaking view of the setting sun. The Nehru garden, on the other hand, is nestled at the center of Lake Fateh Sagar and is covered by a garden of flowers and lilies.

Holidays in Udaipur are a breeze as the city boasts of the most elaborate public and private transport network. Getting into town and moving around is easy. All you need to do is jet in and catch a cab. Udaipur is accessible by car from major cities in India along major roads. It is also accessible by air through the Dabok airport. Booking a flight with the major airlines, Air India, IndiGo, Jet airways and Spicejet, in advance will make your trip faster and more comfortable. Don’t forget to get a pre-paid cab to take you from the airport to the city. The alternative would be hiring one of the branded cabs available at the airport and begin your holiday in Udaipur in style. Udaipur is part of an efficient bus network that links it to major cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Indore and Kota. You can either choose to travel by regular state-run buses to save on cost or pay more for the deluxe buses that will offer you anything from air conditioning to super-comfortable reclining seats. You can also take a train to almost any destination. If you prefer traveling by train, you will find the vast train network more than enough to satisfy your needs.
