Mihingo is a luxurious, family owned lodge in a magical setting adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park. Perched high on a rocky kopje, whose pre-Cambrian granite boulders were formed over 500 million years ago, it has spectacular views over a vast savannah landscape.  Designed to blend in with its fragile surroundings, this environmentally friendly lodge offers comfort, relaxation and the experience of being at one with nature.
An infinity pool overlooks the valley below where buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bush buck and zebra can be seen at the waterhole.  On the rocks you may have the rare chance of seeing the resident family of Klipspringers.  We cannot guarantee that you will see a leopard, but on a night game drive you do have a good chance. As Rungwe Kingdon (the son of the well-known wildlife author, Jonathan Kingdon, and one of Mihingo’s guests) once told us “I have seen more leopards in Lake Mburo National Park than any other park in East Africa”. To further enhance your experience of wild Africa, Mihingo is the only lodge in Uganda to offer daytime and overnight horse safaris into the national park. The only regret that many of our guests have is that they wish they had booked to stay longer than only a night or two. We hope this website will help you to see how many wonderful things there are to do when you stay at Mihingo Lodge.

Room

Mihingo Lodge has 12 luxury, tented rooms designed to provide guests with privacy and tranquillity. Each room has its own unique charm and character, whether it is nestled in forest, overlooking the lake, perched on a rocky outcrop or down by the water hole. Although no two rooms are the same, Suni and Ralph have ensured they all share stunning views and provide guests with a light and airy sanctuary and a feeling of being alone in the bush. Each spacious canvas tent is equipped with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, showers, and flush loos. The rooms have been sensitively designed to complement the local environment with great attention to detail. The doorways are framed by stunning pieces of dead olive wood found on the land. The outside walls reflect the colours of the African soil, created with the help of a specialist from Lamu who mixed natural coloured pigments into the cement. Several of the rooms dramatically incorporate the granite boulders into the design of the bathrooms. As an environmentally friendly lodge all the lights are solar powered and each room has its own solar powered water heater. Bush Buck and Impala have their own salt lick allowing guests to sit on their balcony and watch animals come and go. Buffalo and Water Hole rooms are situated down on the grassy plain, near the water. They are the furthest rooms from the lodge but they are very private and closer to the animals. We offer early morning tea or coffee brought to your room so you can take in the surrounding nature sitting on your spacious veranda before going for breakfast, a game drive or any of our other activity.

Dining

Dine with a view over the park and beyond and then relax in the bar area with sofas curved around the existing granite rock. The lodge has a fantastic reputation for good food too - thanks to Suni's wonderful mother Sarah, who trained the local Mihingo chefs how to make exceptional recipes!

Dining

The spacious, thatched dining area sits on top of the rocky kopje, heralding a bird’s eye view over the park and beyond. A steady breeze from Lake Kacheera makes it one of the coolest places in the lodge on a hot day. Overlooking a waterhole and saltlick, it is a perfect spot to enjoy delicious food and watch wildlife at the same time.

Bar

Suni designed the bar area in which a cement sofa curves around the existing granite rocks and small niches with paraffin lights add sparkle and a sense of cosiness. Most importantly the bar is extremely well stocked so it is more than likely we can serve you your favourite tipple with a bowl of homemade nibbles. Our wine list boasts many South African wines and a few Australian.  Michael, our head barman, reportedly makes the best Irish coffee ever!

Food and Beverages

Mihingo’s reputation for good food is very much thanks to Suni’s wonderful mother Sarah. She was an excellent cook and trained the local Mihingo chefs on how to make the exceptional recipes she had gathered over the years from friends and family around the world. The food at Mihingo is a fusion of different cultures, herbs and spices. Sarah was great at using the best local produce to create fantastic dishes. Lunches are 3 courses. The starter is often a delicious chilled soup, followed by a selection of crisp, fresh salads, cold meats and vegetarian quiches, and then there is always a scrummy pudding. Dinner is also a 3 course meal. Some of the lodge favourites are the feta and coriander samosas with home-made tomato pickle, smoked Nile Perch from Lake Victoria served with a simple olive-oil, lemon juice and caper dressing, grilled beef fillet from the famous Ankole cows and sticky toffee pudding. Breakfasts at Mihingo are designed to set guests up for the day. There is always a selection of fresh fruit, fruit juice, cereals and muesli, home-made yoghurt, pancakes with a hint of lemon zest, eggs of your choice and the full fry up with home-made bread. The lodge can cater to any dietary requirements be it vegetarian, gluten free, vegan or lactose intolerant. Just let us know any food you cannot eat or you dislike and we will prepare something to your taste. Early suppers can be arranged for children and babysitters can be organised to sit in the rooms so parents can eat later and relax.

Extraordinary Stay

This was easily one of our favorite lodges on our safari in Uganda. I wish we had booked additional nights here. I would give this lodge more than 5 stars if I could. It was exceptional. The...

The very best 3 days of our trip to Uganda

Our travel agent was a bit dismissive of our decision to spend 3 nights here, as normally they recommend stopping at Lake Mburo only as a staging post to Bwindi; they're really doing their clients a...

The best lodge in Uganda

Our first time back to Mihingo in 15 years, and it is still the best lodge in Uganda - we can't rate it highly enough. Beautiful eco design in spectacular location, with wonderful food and excellent...
