Great Rift Valley

People have trekked down the Great Rift Valley for generations over thousands of years with some of the recent immigrants descending from the Maasai who dominated much of the valley and its surroundings for centuries before the Europeans arrived. The shallow alkaline Lake Elmenteita, dramatic cliffs of Hell’s Gate and nearby craggy crater rim of Mount Longonot and scenic freshwater Lake Naivasha, are all must see attractions during any Great Rift Valley safari. The refreshing rawness of Lake Nakuru National Park with its prehistoric sites, abundance of  rhinos and huge flocks of flamingos is also worth a visit.

Away from Nakuru, heading into the northern Rift Valley, the land drops away gently, and, as the temperatures rises, the road descends. The journey offers a bright, harsh beauty where as the human population becomes sparser the landscape dries up. The northern region includes the spectacular Kerio Valley, which provides a slightly more unusual route north if you’re heading for the west side of Lake Turkana. Lake Baringo and saline Lake Bogoria are the most likely places in Kenya to see flamingos in their hundreds of thousands.
